Message from Executive Officer
The New Zealand population is undergoing a major demographic transformation as the population ages.
At the time of the 2001 Census, we had a population of nearly half a million people who were older than 65 years. From 2010 onwards, that number of older people will increase again as the baby boom generation enters retirement and it is estimated that the proportion over age 85 will quadruple over the next 20 years. . There will also be significant increase in the number of Maori and Pacific older people.
The social impact of such a significant proportion of the population being "non-working" has major implications for our society in economic, demographic and health related areas.
It is my privilege to serve The HOPE Foundation as we work to provide and fund academic research to improve the quality of life for New Zealanders and New Zealand society as we move through the ageing process. As The Foundation is a non-Government funded charitable trust we rely on support from our Friends, supporters and those who give regularly to enable us to grow our income base and extend our research.
It if was not for their generosity we would not be able to achieve our vision of
Preparing New Zealand for an Ageing Future.
